Das Kranzbach – Noblesse Oblige (Update 2014)

IMG_6163

Visiting Das Kranzbach for the first time in 2013 (read more here), we immediately fell in love with this amazing hideaway. Back in our busy everyday lifes, we couldn’t stop dreaming of our weekend trip. Even though it only was a very short trip, it gave us so much positive energy. This is why we decided to start a new tradition and visit Das Kranzbach every year.

Jungle Beach Resort – A Luxurious Hideaway At The Beach

Jungle Beach Resort, Beach 1

This little resort is close to Trincomalee in the eastern part of Sri Lanka, an area that hasn’t been accessible for foreigners for many years due to the civil war. It was a tip of a former colleague and turned out to be a true hideaway.

The heart of the resort is an open-space building with a well-equipped bar, restaurant and a lovely pool. The rooms are spread to both sides of the main building. Well, rooms is maybe not the right word. Every party has its own bungalow of app. 50 square meters that is almost as big as our old apartment in Munich.

We stayed in a Jungle Bungalow, which is a good compromise between the pretty expensive Beach Bungalow and the Lagoon Bungalow that faces the street. Weiterlesen

Honeymoon Part 2: Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe – A Little Bit Of Gambling

Hyatt Lake Tahoe, Wonderful Lake

Wonderful Lake Tahoe

Directly located at the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe, this huge resort looks pretty luxurious from the outside. It has a large pool, a lovely private beach, three restaurants and its own casino. As we’re not that much into gambling, we didn’t visit the casino, but the gambling atmosphere kind of had its own charm. The whole interior looks very traditional. For my taste the wood of the furniture was a little bit too dark and the carpets were a little bit too thick 😉 Opening the entrance door, you immediately know that you’re in a hotel chain as it’s convenient, but not very exciting. Nevertheless, our room was spacious, well equipped and very comfortable.

Honeymoon Part I: The ACE Hotel, Palm Springs – A Hipster’s Paradise

Ace Palm Springs, My Wonderful Wife

Back in Munich we had decided that Palm springs would be the first stop of our honeymoon. My wife had researched two hotels: The Le Meridien Parker and the ACE. I immediately fell in love with the Parker because of the sophisticated and slightly crazy movies that show their different types of rooms – have a look at their website. My wife preferred the ACE. In the end, it was a question of budget. The ACE was slightly more affordable and so we decided to book a larger room in the ACE, which had its own private patio including a fire place. Weiterlesen

Heritance Kandalama – Modern Architecture Meets Nature

Heritance Kandalama

Arriving from Colombo, we first stayed in a small eco lodge as we decided that it was time for some “back to nature” feeling. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel good after an amazing day trip to the Sigiriya Rock on the second day. In the evening I suddenly became a high fever. This was the moment when we decided to leave our totally open and beautiful, but very basic bamboo hut and look for a more convenient hotel.

As always my wife had done a lot of research before the trip and thought that the Heritance Kandalama wasn’t far away. We decided to give it a try. It took us almost 45 minutes to go there on curvy roads, passing some small villages and a huge lagoon. Driving through the lonely and dark nature reserve with a small tuk-tuk maybe was the best way to approach this hotel – albeit it probably was a very unusual one. Weiterlesen

Das Kranzbach – An English Castle in Bavaria

Das Kranzbach

Driving to the “Das Kranzbach” for the first time, you can hardly believe your eyes. A small private road brings you to a hidden valley and suddenly you see an English castle, surrounded by old woods, rough mountains and -best of all- no other buildings as far as your eye can reach. You might believe that you’ve been beamed straight into a fairy tale. But no, it’s not a Disney movie rather than one of the most beautiful and relaxing places in Bavaria.

Built in 1913 and inspired by the arts and craft movement, this castle was supposed to be the residence of the English Lady Mary Porter. She had commissioned the castle while studying in Leipzig. Sad but true, due to WWI she never saw her finalized castle. In between the house has been used for several purposes until it finally became a hotel in 2007. Before the opening of “Das Kranzbach”, the old building was renovated thoroughly and complemented by a wonderful SPA area. The new, wooden building is a perfect example of a stylish but reduced architecture that is confident enough not to compete with the old castle or the breath-taking nature. Weiterlesen

Moarwirt – A Short Trip To The Countryside

Moarwirt 1

Beautifully located in the middle of nowhere, this hotel and restaurant is a hidden gem. With its traditional Bavarian interior mixed with well-selected design furniture and awesome organic food, it maybe is the perfect place for a weekend trip from Munich. My wife and I had been there a year ago and recently went there again with my mom. Her birthday was in August during our honeymoon so that we wanted to make up for the delay 🙂 Weiterlesen
